Non-Neuronal Control

Neurons get the attention, but they’re only part of the story. Glial cells such as astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and microglia support, insulate and protect them.

How other brain cells work

The brain’s support system

Your brain contains roughly as many glial cells as neurons. For a long time they were thought of as simple “glue” holding neurons in place. We now know they actively shape how well your brain works.

Glial cells feed neurons, clean up after them, insulate their connections so signals travel quickly, regulate the chemistry around synapses, and act as the brain’s immune system. When they’re healthy, neurons function and learn efficiently. When they’re inflamed or stressed, brain function suffers.

This is one reason sleep, nutrition, inflammation and toxin exposure affect how quickly people improve with Neuro EP treatments.

Meet the cells that keep neurons working

The caretakers

Astrocytes

  • Supply neurons with energy and nutrients
  • Clear excess neurotransmitters, such as glutamate, from synapses
  • Help regulate blood flow to active brain regions
  • Help maintain the blood–brain barrier

The insulators

Oligodendrocytes

  • Wrap neurons in myelin, a fatty insulating layer
  • Myelin makes electrical signals travel dramatically faster
  • Support the strength and timing of brain pathways
  • Damaged in conditions such as multiple sclerosis

The immune system

Microglia

  • Act as the brain’s resident immune cells
  • Remove damaged cells and debris
  • Prune unused connections, shaping how the brain learns
  • Drive inflammation when over-activated

Why it matters for treatment

Healthy glia help your brain learn faster

Neurofeedback works through neuroplasticity: your brain learning new patterns. Glial cells are part of that process, supporting new connections and pruning old ones.

That’s why we pay attention to sleep (when the brain clears waste), an anti-inflammatory diet, and reducing toxin and allergen exposure. Each one supports the environment your neurons need to change.
