Overview
What is Pain Reprocessing Therapy?
All pain is created and processed in the brain’s Pain Network. After an injury heals, or sometimes without any injury at all, the brain can keep generating pain because it has learned to interpret normal signals from the body as dangerous. This is often called neuroplastic or primary pain, and it is very common in chronic back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps your brain unlearn that danger response. Through education, careful evaluation of your symptoms, and guided techniques for attending to sensations with safety and curiosity rather than fear, PRT helps turn down the activity of the Pain Network. A randomized controlled trial published in JAMA Psychiatry found that most people with chronic back pain who received PRT were pain-free or nearly pain-free after treatment.
